Gyms are great places to go if you’re looking to improve your health and fitness, but the truth is that these places tend to leave a pretty large carbon footprint. And it’s not surprising, given the lighting that they need, power to heat and cool the building, and not to mention all the machines which are controlled by electricity such as treadmills. If you’re looking to exercise more and improve your fitness but also want to be as eco-friendly as possible, there are loads of alternatives to the gym which you could consider in order to be kinder to both yourself and the planet.
Hiking
Did you know that walking has been voted by GP’s as being one of the best types of exercise? Cardiovascular exercise not only helps us to lose fat and improve strength, it’s also great for getting your heart racing and circulation going, and can help keep you healthy on the inside as well. Rather than slogging on the treadmill by running or walking in the same place for an hour, why not lace up your comfortable and light UA tactical boots and take to the great outdoors for a hike.
Yoga
Yoga is a fantastic exercise which helps to build strength, improve coordination, increase joint suppleness and flexibility and can also have a calming effect on the mind. There are loads of different health benefits of yoga, making it one of the best exercises which you can do – and the best thing is that you don’t need any electrical equipment to do it. In fact, if you live in an area with a warm climate, you’re likely to find a number of outdoor yoga classes so you can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine whilst you exercise as well.
Cycling
Rather than mindlessly jumping in your car, why not consider taking your bicycle instead? Cycling is great cardiovascular exercise and can also help to strengthen core muscles and the muscles in your legs and thighs as well. Riding your bike to work each day instead of taking the car helps to improve your health and fitness, burn a few calories and enjoy the fresh air before a long day at work. Not only that, but the Earth will thank you as well – less vehicles on the road means reduced carbon emissions and pollution levels.
No-Electricity Workout
If you can’t avoid going to the gym, opting for workouts which use the least electricity possible is a good way to be eco-friendly whilst you exercise. For example, jogging or cycling to the gym can be a substitute for using the treadmill, and weight training in the gym is a great option as there’s no electricity involved with using free weights. If you’ve never given weight training a go, you’ll be glad to know that even lifting light can help you to see a massive difference after a few weeks, as you’ll be more toned and a lot stronger.
